Reviews - MALFROY motor lodge, Rotorua, New Zealand
51 Malfroy Road, Rotorua

“Good value and clean”
Reviewed December 21, 2012 NEW via mobile
2 adults & 2 young teenagers stayed for 2 nights. They killed us with kindness and made sure we were happy. Nothing was too hard. The room was clean, tidy, workable and very liveable. Many mirrors with power points! The plunge pool and thermal pool are spa sized which is the only disappointment as I personally wanted a resort kind of experience with thermal pool, but I'll get that again somewhere else later. The pool certainly was healing and Ron has it set up nicely, with lots of good advice. They also gave lots of good advice of what is best to do in area. We had end room next to roundabout when roadworks was diverting even more traffic to area. Was not a big deal. We were originally worried, but it died down between 11pm and 7am as we stayed on weekdays just before Christmas. Not a big resort hotel, just a small mum and dad business but if that is your preference, you'll b well looked after!

“A great little place”
Reviewed December 15, 2012
My husband and I stayed 2 nights at the Malfroy, and we really enjoyed it. Our room was spacious, pretty and modern, and full of natural light. The hosts were great, and helped us out with booking our excursions. The garden surrounding the motel is very pretty. I had a dip in the geothermal pool and the plunge pool, which were conveniently located right outside our room. I notice that people have commented on the noise -- Rotorua is a noisy, bustling little city. We come from Chicago, so we are used to city noise, and also wear ear plugs to sleep. I doubt if the Malfroy would be any noisier than any other motel in Rotorua. We certainly were not bothered by noise at all.

Latest Reviews, MALFROY Family Accommodation Rotorua

“Perfect for families with small children”
Reviewed November 21, 2012 NEW
We stayed for 2 nights in September 2012. I was a bit put off when we arrived as the property is located on the side of a large roundabout. However, although our room was right on the corner, the traffic died down quite early and was reasonably quiet. We booked online and experienced no problems with the booking.

The children (3 & 7) loved both the pools and the wishing well. They were also very excited by the treasure hunt that they were given when we checked in. It was fairly difficult but, with some assistance from Ron, they managed to complete the hunt and they certainly enjoyed their prize!

Both Ron and Mairi were very knowledgable about the area and were able to direct us to appropriate food outlets (gluten free otions) and attractions. Our 2 bedroom unit was very clean, cosy and well appointed. We did need to turn off the heating as the unit got quite hot. I would certainly recommend this accommodation to anyone looking for a convenient, well priced motel that is suitable for children.

“Excellent comfortable stay”
Reviewed November 17, 2012 NEW
We were greeted by Ron our host. I know sometimes motel operators call themselves a host but are really an owner/manager. Ron made us feel like we had come to stay at his home. He gave us great information on places to see (including discount coupons) and restaurants and then gave us his tour of the room and facilities, including the BBQ area, the 38 degree Celsius pool and the 41 degree Celsius mineral hot springs pool. Our room included all we needed to be very comfortable and have breakfast in our kitchen area and dinner as well on our patio after barbecuing local meat products. Is this a 5 star hotel with a bar and dining room-no. But as far as I am concerned it is a 5 star place to stay for friendliness, comfort and real quality for a reasonable price. Thanks Ron

“Wonderful four day stay”
Reviewed November 16, 2012
We took our 95 year old Dad to Malfroy as he wanted somewhere with a thermal pool. What a lovely place. Great hosts, good accommodation, lovely property with well kept gardens which made a lovely place to sit after a day sightseeing. Our unit was clean and well equiped. Bedding comfortable. Staff very freindly and unit supplied with fresh towels and cleaned each day.Ron was about each day to check if we needed anything and checking we were comfortable in our unit. Very handy to shopping complex. We certainly would recommend staying at this property and we certainly would return if staying in Rotorua. When you book from an internet sight you wonder if the property is as good as it looks on the websight. Yes this one is.

Room Tip: Ask the proprietor he ceretainly looks after his guests requests

Cheap Petrol in Rotorua, Another Reason to Visit!

Rotorua's low petrol prices are drawing motorists from Whakatane, Tauranga and Tokoroa.

Te Ngae Rd Gull Station manager Glenys Rigby said petrol was being sold at $1.989 at the station yesterday.

"We get people all the time from Whakatane, Tauranga and Tokoroa," she said. "They always come and tell us, 'Your prices are so wonderful'."

Drivers in several provincial centres are saving big money at the pump. But others are paying up to 10c a litre more for petrol.

Places such as Rotorua, Whangarei and the Wairarapa are benefiting from a surge in local market competition between petrol stations.

Referred to as the "Gull effect", New Zealand's petrol minnow is forcing prices down in places it operates.

“Comfortable and friendly”
Reviewed July 28, 2012
We had spent the previous few nights in a very small and simple room so it was so nice to have some more space and a kitchen to do our own cooking. The thermal spa is a big highlight of this place, we didn't bother spending money on going anywhere else as we were able to come home at the end of each long day and soak in the hot mineral pool free to hotel customers and open all night. The couple that run the place are really lovely and helped us out with all the information we needed and discounts for the attractions we were going to, even letting us borrow some oil to cook with instead of having to buy a big bottle for one meal. It's the little touches that make this a really great place to stay.

Reviewed July 23, 2012
I stayed for two nights at the Malfroy Motor Lodge with my parents a couple of weeks ago while they were visiting from Scotland. The owners are really friendly and gave us great suggestions on things to do during our stay, both restaurants they recommended were fantastic. The accommodation was nice, a good size, clean, with everything we needed. Took advantage of the hot pool while we were there which took away the winter chills! Would definitely stay there again :)

Heartwarming, Read Customer Reviews

5 of 5 starsReviewed September 16, 2012
had bought my mother across to NZ for some relaxing therapeutic treatments in the thermal pools of Rotorua.
I managed to find this accommodation online (The Malfroy motor lodge) that advertised the 'on premises mineral pools'. Little did I know what a gem i had found.
Once we arrived not only was it that the pools were better then expected, and the rooms well appointed, but the service was really 'out of this world'. My mother has had two knee replacements and is finding it rather hard after the operations and is constantly receiving conventional treatment for her aches and pains and manoeuvrability, however after spending two sessions a day for 5days in these mineral waters (as recommended by Mairi and Ron) they were alleviated.

Mairi and Ron where do I start???

THANK YOU...

You two are one in a million hosts, you really are... I would like to extend my warmest 'thanks' to you both for your extraordinary efforts and surprises... Mums birthday was extra special due to your organisational skills and contacts with your service suppliers throughout Rotorua and 'I will' be returning to your establishment again...

Our first stay in New Zealand was in Rotorua, we stayed at the Malfroy for 4 nights due to the comments posted by others.
There is plenty of accommodation in Rotorua, but I doubt that they have that personal attention
Given by Ron & Mairi who make you feel welcome. We stayed in a 1 bedroom unit, it was extremely comfortable
And clean and had everything that we needed. They were also very helpful with suggestions of places to visit and also to eat.
Mairi suggested Oppies fish n chips, we had them on the first night and went back the 2nd night for the Chinese food,
Both were excellent, it was also suggested we eat at the skyline Grill, that was fantastic and the views were fabulous.

We wished we could have spent more time in Rotorua and would gladly stay at the Malfroy Motor Lodge again, and would highly recommend it to all.

We stayed at Malfroy Lodge for 3 nights in a 2 bedroom apartment. Very comfortable and had everything we needed. Ron made us feel safe and secure as we were travelling alone just us 2 girls. The heated pool was divine we used it most nights. Ron organised our activities for us with attention to detail. The location is very central, no traffic noise in our room. The apartment was clean and the grounds are pretty and very well attended too. Our stay was made more memorable because of the welcome and attention to detail. Ron and Mairi really know how to look after tourists. Thank you for an enjoyable holiday in lovely Rotorua we had a wonderful time. we have no negative comments.Keep up the excellent work you are making a difference to peoples holidays. Di and Rhea.

Wonderful hosts and good value.”
Reviewed August 22, 2012 NEW
We stayed at Malfroy Motor Lodge for three nights. The night we had arrived the host, Ron had been waiting up late for us to ensure we had a safe check in. He then showed us to our rooms which were thermally heated which was a great relief from the outdoor weather as we had traveled in the winter month. Ron gave us a tour of the room and the outdoor mineral pool and the heated pool which was amazing, we were in there every night of our stay.

Arriving in Rotorua, we had very little planned but Ron and Mairi were extremely helpful in suggesting activities and doing everything they possibly could to assist us. They booked everything that we wanted to go to for us as well as organising lifts and transfers to ensure we got to the locations and back to the lodge safely.

The beds were very comfortable, the room and bathroom was clean which is very important to me. The kitchen had all the utensils we needed, coffee and tea is provided and the television had access to enough channels for entertainment. We were also provided with free wi-fi and Ron informed us if we had run out, we could just go and ask him for more which was fantastic as this is the only lodge I have ever stayed at providing free internet. I've always been charged for internet at everywhere I've stayed at. Our room was at the very front of the lodge, just across the road yet we had no issues with sound and the lodge is very central to everything. The lodge also provides discounts for a lot of the activities in Rotorua which is a bonus.

The hosts are amazing. Ron and Mairi are so friendly and welcoming that you feel like you're at home while staying at this lodge which really made our trip what it was for my boyfriend and I. We had a wonderful time in Rotorua and it was largely due to Ron and Mairi being so helpful in suggesting so many activities and really striving to ensure their guests are happy and comfortable. They know so much about the culture and history of Rotorua as well and were very happy to provide us with free education whenever they could.

Easily the best accommodation I've ever stayed at and definitely recommended to anyone staying in Rotorua. Nobody will look after you as much as Ron and Mairi will, I wouldn’t bother staying anywhere else.

Brisbane, Australia

We stayed 2 nights in the family unit and it was great.

Ron bends over backwards to help where he can and Mairi was so helpful with the tours & attractions too.

Everything in Rotorua is thermally heated, and this hotel has great heating in all the rooms as well as 2 pools; one tap water and one mineral, both thermally heated.
We took our 3 year old in the pool every day and he loved it. We did too !

Ron helped us out with washing clothes and probably put himself out doing so but never let on. He also helped out getting the barbeque going and supplying tools as well !

Everything they suggested was spot on and we had a lot of fun in Rotorua without being busy either. You can see 4 different thermal pools & wonderlands if you want to, or listen to Ron & Mairi, go to the one they suggest for you (depend on your length of stay) and cross that genre off your list. Really really helpful info. Actually I normally book everything in advance on holidays but in this case because of what I'd read on TA I didn't organise anything knowing that there guys would help out, and they stepped up just like everybody says they do.

Ok so on to the room: Room 8. thermally heated as I said, and it does get hot if you want it to. Great bedrooms, comfortable beds. CLEAN (it's important to me). Shower is something of a magic show and we were shown how to use it, but we ended up spending more time in the pool! In the end I think we used the spa, bath & shower with the radio.

The room is described as a large family suite and it has 2 rooms with queen beds in each. One also has a single bed in it and the other has a single bed in a separate room off it.
We put our 3 year old in that one as it was super dark (no external windows) and stayed in the room his was off, thinking he'd prefer us close to him.

In hindsight we should have put ourselves in the other main bedroom. The reason I say this is the ONLY slight negative thing I have to say about the place and that's the road noise from this room. I can't comment about the other queen room in the apartment but I suspect noise would be slightly better but you can't change the location of the property. At the end of the day it is where it is. If you come from the beach or the hills and are not used to road noise (like me) then you hear it here. If you're used to it, great. The room is double glazed and every other aspect makes up for it. I think the family suite probably gets the worse of it as it is on a corner and gets the noise from two sides.

As I said, it is what it is, they can't change the location. Ron and Mairi are super helpful and very friendly and everything about them and this place makes up for the noise. I do hope they'd have us again, because we'd definitely go back but maybe to a different apartment or at least the other room of the same one. I guess I am just a light sleeper.

The apartment is beautifully appointed and has a full kitchen. The TV only has a few channels on it, but as Ron said, people prefer to get a DVD from reception and watch that than have ads on the telly and probably watch something you don't really want to anyway. They have a nice variety of dvds and Ron said it's growing.
They also have a kids playground which our 3 year old tested out!

We thought the rates were reasonable given the facilities and amenities.

Anyway a long review, and possibly slightly picky but TA only works if people put honest reviews up. This is a great place to stay with great hosts.
