Jean Michel Malfroy - 1839-1894 |
MALFROY motor lodge is named after the renowned French engineer, Jean Michel Malfroy - 1839-1894 - who after mining in Victoria arrived on the West Coast of New Zealand in the 1860’s; bent on gold-seeking. There he imbibed a taste for local politics, and was for some time the Mayor of Ross. He became Resident Chief Engineer in Rotorua immediately after the Mount Tarawera eruptions in 1886. Mr Malfroy took a great personal interest in the geo-thermal valley, Whakarewarewa, and designed and built the ‘Malfroy Geyser’s.’ In 1889, his works were formally recognised by his being appointed to represent the Colony at the Great Exhibition in Paris, where he received the distinction of “Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur.”
