MALFROY motor lodge Inspires with Environmental Innovation
Working to further enhance its Enviro Silver status and 4 Star Qualmark rating, MALFROY motor lodge completed a two-year improvement programme in late 2011 and it has also been announced as one of the Trip Advisor Top 25 Bargain Motels in the South Pacific for 2012.
MALFROY’s two key recent developments are a geothermal re-injection bore and gas extraction system. The geothermal re-injection bore provides all of the lodge’s central heating and hot water needs thus minimising electricity usage. A new locally designed and built two stage gas extractor system, extracts the maximum amount of potentially dangerous hydrogen sulphide gas from geothermal water (occurring naturally underground) within a sealed chamber.
The gasses are then discharged at a safe level to dissipate naturally into the atmosphere. The geothermal waters then continue through the system and into a secondary gas extractor. Only after the second gas removal process is the water used in the lodge’s mineral pool – the temperature of which is automatically controlled.
These advanced developments received a ‘big tick’ from Rotorua District Council (RDC) inspectors who praised the system for its innovation and effectiveness; in fact RDC have monitored the system since November 2009 with a view to recommending its use within the wider community.
