MALFROY motor lodge Inspires with Environmental Innovation

Working to further enhance its Enviro Silver status and 4 Star Qualmark rating, MALFROY motor lodge completed a two-year improvement programme in late 2011 and it has also been announced as one of the Trip Advisor Top 25 Bargain Motels in the South Pacific for 2012.

MALFROY’s two key recent developments are a geothermal re-injection bore and gas extraction system. The geothermal re-injection bore provides all of the lodge’s central heating and hot water needs thus minimising electricity usage. A new locally designed and built two stage gas extractor system, extracts the maximum amount of potentially dangerous hydrogen sulphide gas from geothermal water (occurring naturally underground) within a sealed chamber.

The gasses are then discharged at a safe level to dissipate naturally into the atmosphere. The geothermal waters then continue through the system and into a secondary gas extractor. Only after the second gas removal process is the water used in the lodge’s mineral pool – the temperature of which is automatically controlled.

These advanced developments received a ‘big tick’ from Rotorua District Council (RDC) inspectors who praised the system for its innovation and effectiveness; in fact RDC have monitored the system since November 2009 with a view to recommending its use within the wider community.

Discover Rotorua's Rich History

The name Rotorua comes from Māori, the full name being Te Rotorua-nui-a-Kahumatamomoe; roto means lake and rua two – Rotorua thus meaning 'Second lake'. Kahumatamomoe was the uncle of the Māori chief Ihenga, the ancestral explorer of the Te Arawa.^[4] It was the second major lake the chief discovered, and he dedicated it to his uncle. It is the largest of a multitude found to the northeast of the city, all connected with the Rotorua Caldera and nearby Mount Tarawera. The name can also mean the equally appropriate 'crater lake'.^[4]

The area was initially settled by Māori of the Te Arawa iwi. The first European in the area was probably Phillip Tapsell who was trading from the Bay of Plenty coast at Maketu from 1828. He later married into Te Arawa and became highly regarded by them.^[5] Missionaries Henry Williams and Thomas Chapman visited in 1831^[4] and Chapman and his wife established a mission at Te Koutu in 1835.^[6] This was abandoned within a year but Chapman returned in 1838 and established a second mission at Mokoia Island.^[4]^[6]

The lakeshore was a prominent site of skirmishes during the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s. A "special town district" was created in the 1883, in order to promote Rotorua's potential as a spa destination. The town was connected to Auckland with the opening of the Rotorua Branch railway and commencement of the Rotorua Express train in 1894, resulting in the rapid growth of the town and tourism from this time forward. Rotorua was established as a borough in 1922 and declared a city in 1962 before becoming a District in 1979.

The museum is in the old bath house, a beautiful building that houses a variety of interesting artefacts, and has 3 really good short movies. There is a café which is also a great place for lunch and to ponder over all the culture you have learned (Allow 2 hours without lunch).

MALFROY motor lodge, Rotorua accommodation, is named after the renowned French engineer, Jean-Michel Camille Malfroy, who was employed as Rotorua’s Resident Engineer from 1886, and was also Chairman of the Rotorua Town Board. Jean-Michel represented the colony at the Paris Exhibition in 1889, and was made a Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur for his innovative geo-thermal works in and around Rotorua.
