Museum Rotorua

Not the museum trip you may expect.  The Museum building is a tribute unto itself in many ways and well worth while having a look through.  It is worth choosing a fine day to be able to take advantage of the viewing platforms on top of the building.

From its heyday as an experimental spa treatments centre, the museum was saved from dilapidation when it became an underground venue for gigs in the 60’s.  There are a range of installations to experience, and a movie theatre that gives a very modern re-enactment of the history of the Rotorua region – with no less a person that Temuera Morrison (Shortland Street, Once Were Warriors & Star Wars) guiding you through.

Also well worth a mention is the Arts gallery, it has a range of interesting contemporary and more classics art forms.  There are guides available for each of the sections of the museum and you have the option of absorbing it all in your own way, or gaining the additional value of local knowledge by taking a guided tour.

Skyline Gondola, Luge Rotorua

The Luge is traditionally the ‘must do’ activity in Rotorua.  Spectacular views of the city also result in a unique way to utilise gravity in an environmentally friendly fashion – roll.  Skyline have created a patented go-cart (non-motorised) and some really well designed luge tracks.  You don’t need a motor to go fast or to have a race, and you will enjoy the ride.  Skyline also have a top level restaurant, along with  a new swing based ride that seems to get the punters screaming if a bit of freefall is more your thing.

Choosing the name: MALFROY motor lodge

Jean Michel Malfroy - 1839-1894

MALFROY motor lodge is named after the renowned French engineer, Jean Michel Malfroy - 1839-1894 - who after mining in Victoria arrived on the West Coast of New Zealand in the 1860’s; bent on gold-seeking. There he imbibed a taste for local politics, and was for some time the Mayor of Ross.  He became Resident Chief Engineer in Rotorua immediately after the Mount Tarawera eruptions in 1886.  Mr Malfroy took a great personal interest in the geo-thermal valley, Whakarewarewa, and designed and built the ‘Malfroy Geyser’s.’  In 1889, his works were formally recognised by his being appointed to represent the Colony at the Great Exhibition in Paris, where he received the distinction of “Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur.”
